about the author
Katrina Lau Hammond is a mum to a 8-year-old perfectionist and a strong-willed 6-year-old.
Katrina was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 34 years old, when her youngest child was still a baby.
She searched around for resources to help explain cancer to her then 3-year-old, but couldn’t find anything that quite fit the bill. So, drawing on her own experiences and learnings, she decided to write her own.
She was diagnosed with another breast cancer on the other side 7 months later. This gave her even further insight into the impact of cancer treatment on her family, and how a village of friends and family gathered around to support them.
She is currently living with metastatic breast cancer, and in between the balance of ongoing treatment, tests, surgeries, and child-rearing, she has written a picture book for those bright young minds whose parents have unfortunately received a recent diagnosis. She has also co-authored and photographed a family cookbook with her mother Jeanie, called Makan at Mum’s, published and released in September 2021.

about the illustrator
Krista Brennan is a freelance illustrator, fine artist, and art teacher who lives in Sydney with her partner and mischievous cat. She primarily uses traditional methods for her art, including watercolour, ink and oils.
Krista’s art has been featured in books, card games, exhibitions, and competitions, but most of all, she enjoys using her pictures to tell stories. Whether in painting portraits or illustration, she is fascinated with the narratives that shape our understanding of the world.
In illustrating, she is always excited to find ways to visually enhance the story she is working with. She loves finding themes to visually carry through a book, and she has an eye for the sorts of natural yet unexpected details that will give the images authentic life.
Her specialist medium is watercolour, tackling a diverse range of subjects and styles with her bold, intense, realistic approach. She loves the vibrancy, texture and luminosity of watercolour, and finds it both incredibly challenging and rewarding to work with. Visit kristabrennan.com.au to see more of her work
